Welcome to Kaizen Lab

We believe that language matters in mental health care.

Our mission is to better understand the links between language and emotion across human development and to improve the mental health of individuals who belong to multilingual, multicultural families and communities.

Research shows that we feel differently based on the languages we speak.

Our research team is testing whether and how languages shape emotional experiences, cognitive processes, and mental health symptoms and outcomes.

We are a team of clinicians, researchers, and students at Santa Clara University.

The Kaizen Lab is housed within the Department of Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University.

In collaboration with the next generation of clinicians, we explore how to effectively deliver linguistically equitable and culturally responsive mental health care.

What we do

Research

We study bilingualism & multilingualism in mental health care. We examine how one’s language background and experiences shape their emotion expression, regulation, and communication

Clinical Practice

We provide linguistically accessible, culturally responsive treatments and train clinicians to serve those who belong to diverse communities

Community Outreach

We engage with families, schools, and communities through multilingual workshops, resources, and partnerships

Kaizen is a Japanese word that means

to change for good - one step at a time.”
